米国アラバマ州出身の野球選手ハンク・アーロンは、あの伝説の本塁打王ベー
ブ・ルースと並び称される黒人大リーガーです。ニグロ・リーグからわずか一
万ドルでミルウォーキー、今のアトランタ・ブレーブスに入団した彼は、その
長い現役生活中ホームラン・キングはたったの(?)四回でしたが、三振しても
あきらめずに「次こそは！」と挑み続け、ついにルースの記録 714 本を抜い
て二十三年間で通算 755 本という大記録を打ち立てたのでした。

スポーツと言えば2002年、日韓両国でサッカーのワールドカップが開催されま
したが、残念ながら観客の中にも、ボールが相手チーム側にあるというだけで
ブーイングしている、とてもサポーターとは呼べない人たちもいたようです。

もちろん私も母国の代表を応援していますが、敵味方ともに精一杯プレイして
いる時は、まずはそのことを称えるべきではないでしょうか。味方チームが必
死にやっていて、かつそのボールを相手に取られたなら、取った相手がその瞬
間の "the best player" なのだと思います。「敵ながらあっぱれ！」です。

その上で「次こそは！」と気持ちを切り替えて味方チームが頑張る。その姿を
見てサポーターもまた応援する――They were the best players then. But 
we know when we see them again, we're going to be ready!――我々もぜひ、
ハンク・アーロンの心意気を見習いたいものです。「あっぱれ対戦国！　
頑張れ日本！！」
